Bicycle Helmet for School Children in Cameron Highlands

A Helmet Initiatives Project Jointly Organized by

Team,

Just a note to share a quick update on the Malaysian Helmet Initiative (MHI). The MHI is aligned with World Health Organization's (WHO) Helmet Initiative objectives, which is to prevent serious injuries to vulnerable and high-risk children. This objective is also aligned withJohnsonDiversey's vision to Preserve, Protect and Transform.

Why Cameron Highlands? Cameron Highlands is approximately 7500 ft above sea level, and the region is famous for its tea plantations due to the cool weather all year round.

I spoke to the Camerons Police prior to the event, and he told me that in the past 6 months, there were no fatalities due to bicycle or motorcycle crashes in Cameron, however, schoolchildren falling from bicycles and injuring themselves are so common that they don't keep statistics anymore. One major reason for the crashes is that t
he Highlands is one of the wettest regions in Malaysia, and the hilly terrain makes cycling a hazard.

A total of 79 schoolchildren from 7 schools in the Camerons area attended our program, which was jointly run by the Malaysian Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association (Road Safety Unit) and JohnsonDiversey, and supported by the Ministry of Transport, Min of Health and Min of Education, Malaysia.

The kids were taught about road signs and why we should all obey road signs, what
happens to a child's head during a crash (using a melon) with / without helmet, kids undergo a circuit training on safe bicycling (e.g. balancing on narrow track, negotiating bends, roundabouts and bumpy track safely).

We would like to thank Captain Bala, Leftenant Anita and the MVFRA team for making this happen. Thanks too to Josephine Chin who represented JohnsonDiversey Malaysia at the event, and was actively participating in teaching the kids how to wear helmets properly, and also supervised the kids on their circuit training round.

JohnsonDiversey is proud to be part of this effort. Hope you all like the attached pictorial report.
