2006 THE STAR METRO
Fire Safety for
Children
By DEBBIE CHAN
EXCITED
murmurs and chatter
filled the air of
the Cheras Leisure
Mall concourse on
Saturday as 250 kids
got ready to attend
the Fire Kids Club
Safety Workshop.
Cheras Leisure Mall,
in collaboration
with the Malaysian
Volunteer Fire and
Rescue Association (MVFRA),
organised the
program to educate
the younger
generation on fire
safety.
There have been many
occasions where
firefighters find
children in fire
emergencies
suffocating from
smoke inhalation.
The program,
conducted by the
volunteers from
MVFRA, taught the
kids safety tips on
how to save
themselves in fire
emergencies.
At the workshop, the
children learnt
different survival
methods including
the Stop, Drop and
Roll, Crawl Low
Under Smoke and
Smoke House Escape.
One of the most
exciting activities
in the workshop was
the fire engine ride
where the kids had
an opportunity to
ride on a real fire
truck.
The guest of honor
for the event was
Higher Education
deputy minister
Datuk Ong Tee Keat,
who launched the
ceremony and
presented workshop
certificates to the
children.
Also present to
oversee the workshop
was the mall's
security manager Yap
Seng Hock and MVFRA
chairman Bala
Supramaniam.
“We are happy to see
the laughter and joy
of the children
while they were in
the workshop. We
hope this
educational
experience will
better equip these
kids about the fire
safety measures,”
said the mall's
marketing and
promotions manager
Eva Hew, senior
marketing and
promotions manager
of Leisure Mall.
