A
GOTONG-ROYONG to service and clean the water hydrants at the
Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Berhad long houses in Pantai Dalam,
Kuala Lumpur,
yesterday produced a shock-none of the hydrants were
functioning.
A team of
voluntary fire fighting personnel from Jalan San Peng could not
locate the square concrete boxes containing the keys and bars
which are needed to operate the hydrant.
At least
three of the hydrants servicing the long houses in Bukit Pantai
Dalam were checked and all were without keys and bars.
The fire
fighting team had initially tried to clear the earth and debris
surrounding one of the hydrant in the hope locating the box.
They used
water from a fire engine which was deployed to the site.
After
clearing the site and failing to locate the box, they then dug
around the hydrant and even then, there was no box.
The team
then checked the other two hydrants and both had no keys and
bars.
A senior
volunteer official said he would submit a report on the missing
concrete boxes to the Fire Services Department.
He also
urged the residents to lodge reports with the police and the
department.
A resident
said the safety of the longhouse occupants are at stake
especially if a fire breaks out.
The
gotong-royong project yesterday was held in conjunction with the
Olympics Day organized by Malaysian Olympics Council.
It was
launched by Lembah Pantai MP Datuk Shahrizat Jalil, who is also
the parliamentary secretary to the Youth and Sports Ministry.
